The Water Regulations (1999) replaced local water byelaws with national legislation on 1 July 1999. The regulations govern the installation, maintenance and use of fixtures and fittings on premises and are designed to protect from poor water quality and unnecessary waste.
The prime objective of the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 is to continue the work of protecting public health and promoting sensible and efficient use of water, to the advantage of the community at large. The regulations apply to any premises which are connected to, or are to be connected to, a public water supply.
To comply with the Water Regulations installers and users of water fittings must not cause or permit waste, misuse, undue consumption, erroneous measurement or contamination of the supply of wholesome water.
